The Venue

Finca Es Cabàs

A restored Mallorcan finca among centuries-old olive terraces — the home of MALLORCA ART RETREAT.

Finca Es Cabàs — the heart of the retreat

A restored Mallorcan finca set among centuries-old olive terraces, with the Serra de Tramuntana as its backdrop and the Mediterranean light as its constant companion.

Every MALLORCA ART RETREAT takes place at Finca Es Cabàs, a working country estate in the Mallorcan countryside, a short drive from Palma. It is a lived-in place — stonewalled, sun-warmed, unhurried — where the rhythm of the week is written by the land itself.

Because we host only fifteen painters at a time, the finca stays quiet. There are no crowds, no queues, no strangers at the next table. The studio, the terraces, the pool, the olive grove: they belong to the group alone. This is what makes a week here feel less like a booked holiday and more like staying at the house of a friend who happens to own a very old, very beautiful farm.

The restored stone finca at Finca Es Cabàs

A finca with centuries in its walls

The oldest walls of Finca Es Cabàs date back several hundred years, to an age when estates like this one were self-sufficient worlds — pressing their own oil, baking their own bread, keeping bees and sheep and vines. The thick stone walls were built for shade and for shelter, and they still do their work today, keeping the rooms cool through the long Mediterranean afternoons.

Over the generations the finca has been restored with care rather than reinvented. Original beams were kept. Terracotta floors were relaid by hand. Shutters were returned to their green. What you see now is a house that has grown old gracefully — a place where every stone carries a little of the island’s history, and none of it has been sanded away.

The estate remains surrounded by the olive and almond groves that sustained it for so long. The trees are gnarled and ancient, some of them far older than the buildings; they still give fruit, and that fruit still finds its way to the table. To walk the grounds at dusk, with the light going gold over the terraces, is to understand why painters have loved this island for centuries.

The tafona — original stone olive press at Finca Es Cabàs

The tafona — the estate’s beating heart

At the centre of the estate stands the tafona: the traditional Mallorcan olive press, where the estate’s olives were once crushed, milled and turned to oil. It is the oldest working room at Finca Es Cabàs, and the one that best tells the story of the place — the round stone, the press, the air still somehow heavy with the memory of harvest.

On quiet evenings it becomes one of the most atmospheric corners of the finca — a place to look, to sketch, to simply sit with a glass of estate wine while the light falls through the old stone opening.

For painters, the tafona is a gift of a subject. The textures, the shadows, the deep ochres and iron greys — it is a still life waiting to happen, and more than one participant has spent a whole afternoon inside its cool walls.

Everything the week asks for

The finca is a working estate, but it is set up entirely around the rhythm of painting, resting and eating well together.

The painting studio

A light-filled shared studio, easels for every painter, and the lead artist circulating throughout the day.

The pool

A stone-edged pool on the terrace, framed by the mountains — for a swim between sessions and the long golden hour after them.

Olive groves & gardens

Ancient olive and almond trees, dry-stone terraces and shaded gardens — a living landscape of plein air subjects.

Private chef & terrace dining

Seasonal Mallorcan meals prepared by a private chef, served long and shared under the pergola or the olive trees.

The tafona

The estate’s original stone olive press — preserved, atmospheric, and one of the most painted corners of the finca.

Shaded terraces

Cool stone porches and pergolas for reading, resting and the aperitivo hour as the sun drops behind the Tramuntana.

Yoga & wellness

Gentle morning and evening yoga on the terrace, when bodies begin to feel the hours standing at the easel.

Wi-Fi & quiet corners

Reliable Wi-Fi throughout the main house and a handful of quiet corners for the rare moment you need to reconnect.

Where the finca sits

Finca Es Cabàs lies in the Mallorcan countryside a short drive from Palma, between the plain and the rising slopes of the Serra de Tramuntana. It is close enough to the island’s capital, airport, restaurants and galleries to reach with ease — and far enough that the only sounds at night are the wind in the olives and, on warm evenings, the cicadas.

Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI) serves the island with direct flights from most major European cities. Airport transfers on arrival and departure days are available on request, and the drive through the almond groves and dry-stone lanes is the first, gentle brushstroke of the week.
