The MALLORCA ART RETREAT Experience

A week devoted entirely to painting. To looking, and looking again. To the kind of deep focus that modern life rarely permits. MART exists to give artists — at every level — the conditions they need to grow. This is what a dedicated painting art retreat feels like.

The Painting

Five days. One artist. Fifteen painters.

Each day follows a rhythm that has shaped painters for centuries. Morning begins with reflection — a quiet review of yesterday's work, a conversation about what worked and what didn't. Then the studio opens. From half-past nine until half-past noon, you paint. The lead artist circulates, offering individual feedback. There is no lecture, no demonstration at the front of the room. This is learning by doing, by looking, by being seen.

After lunch — long, Mediterranean, under the pergola or the olive trees — the afternoon session begins. Sometimes in the studio, refining the morning's work. Sometimes out in the landscape, at an easel in the olive grove, painting en plein air while the light moves across the mountains. The afternoons are looser, more exploratory. The artist is there, but the space is yours.

By the end of the week, you will have completed several works. More importantly, you will have learned to see differently. That change — the change in how you look at light, at colour, at the world — is the thing that lasts.

Mallorca as muse

There is a reason artists have been drawn to Mallorca for centuries. The quality of Mediterranean light here is different — softer than Greece, warmer than Provence, somehow both clear and gentle at the same time. Miró made it his home. Chopin wrote some of his most beautiful preludes here, in a monastery cell in Valldemossa, the Tramuntana wind his only audience.

The island itself is a painting. Limestone cliffs plunging into turquoise water. Ancient olive terraces climbing the mountainsides. Villages of golden stone that look as though they grew from the earth. Everywhere you look, there is a composition waiting. The light changes constantly — from the cool clarity of morning to the deep gold of late afternoon, the kind of light that makes everything look important.

We paint outdoors as often as the weather allows. The grounds of Finca Es Cabàs offer endless subjects: the olive grove, the stone terraces, the pool reflecting sky. And on one afternoon, we take the group to a nearby location — a coastal cove, a mountain viewpoint, a village square — to paint from life in a different register.

The Life

More than painting

A retreat is not only about the hours at the easel. It is about the hours between. The aperitivo on the terrace as the sun drops behind the Tramuntana. The long dinners under olive trees, plates of grilled vegetables and fresh fish, local wine that tastes of the earth it came from. The conversations that start over coffee and continue into the night.

Across the week, we build small moments of restoration into the rhythm. Gentle yoga on the terrace on the second evening, when bodies begin to feel the hours of standing. A barbecue evening, a paella night, and an open studio under the stars, when painting talk gives way to laughter. And on the final night, a celebration dinner — the week's work on display, the group's journey complete.

The meals deserve their own paragraph. They are prepared by a private chef using seasonal Mallorcan ingredients: olives from Finca Es Cabàs's own trees, vegetables from the local market, fish caught that morning. Every meal is shared. Every meal is an event. Food is not fuel here. It is part of the experience.

The Intimacy

Why fifteen matters at an art retreat

Fifteen is not an arbitrary number. It is the point at which a group becomes a community. More than fifteen, and individual attention dissolves. Less than eight, and the creative energy of the group diminishes. Fifteen is the sweet spot — large enough to generate momentum, small enough that everyone is seen.

In a group of fifteen, the lead artist can spend meaningful time with each painter every day. Not a passing comment, but a real conversation about your work. Where you're going. What you're trying to say. What the painting is asking of you. This kind of attention is impossible in a larger group. It is the single greatest gift of the MART model.

The intimacy extends beyond the studio. You will know everyone's name by the first evening. You will know their work by the second. By the third, you will be having conversations about painting that you cannot have anywhere else — because everyone in the room is an artist, whether they have painted for twenty years or twenty days. This shared focus, this common language, is rare. It is what makes a week at MART feel less like a holiday and more like a homecoming.
